Why You Should Stop Chasing Perfection: Progress Over Perfection

One of the biggest traps people fall into, especially students, is the idea that they need to be perfect in order to succeed. Whether it’s in school, personal goals, or life in general, the constant pursuit of perfection can be exhausting and counterproductive. I often see this in my students, and it’s a lesson I try to teach every time: progress is far more important than perfection.

Let me tell you about one of my students, Jason, from Los Angeles. Jason recently scored 92% on a test, but instead of being proud of his hard work, he was disappointed. Why? Because he didn’t get 100%. He was so focused on that perfect score that he couldn’t see how well he had actually done. This got me thinking about how often we all fall into the trap of perfectionism. In reality, perfection is a myth, and chasing it will only stress you out and prevent you from appreciating how far you’ve come.

At CoolCantor Hebrew School, we emphasize the importance of progress, not perfection, in everything we do—from Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons to life lessons based on the Torah Portion. In this blog, I’ll share why you should stop chasing perfection and instead focus on growth. I’ll also explain how this mindset shift can positively impact your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah preparation, as well as their overall success.

Perfection is a Myth

The idea of being perfect is something we’ve all grappled with at some point. Whether it’s getting a perfect score, making no mistakes, or being the best at everything, we often set unrealistic expectations for ourselves. But here’s the truth: perfection doesn’t exist. It’s an unattainable goal that only leads to frustration.
When we aim for perfection, we put unnecessary pressure on ourselves. This pressure can prevent us from appreciating the hard work and progress we’ve made along the way. Instead of celebrating a 92% on a test, as Jason should have, we beat ourselves up for not reaching 100%. This mindset can hold us back, both in academic settings and in life.

The Problem with Perfectionism

Perfectionism often paralyzes people, stopping them from taking risks or trying new things. Why? Because if something can’t be done perfectly, they fear it’s not worth doing at all. This can hinder growth and learning, both of which come from making mistakes and improving over time.

At CoolCantor Online Hebrew School, we’ve seen this with students who are preparing for their Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah. Some students fear making mistakes during their Torah readings or Hebrew lessons, but I always remind them: it’s not about getting everything perfect; it’s about showing up, doing your best, and growing from the experience.

Focus on Progress

Instead of chasing perfection, focus on progress. Jason may not have scored 100%, but he improved from his previous test, and that’s what counts. The same applies to learning Hebrew, understanding the Weekly Torah Portion, or mastering any subject. Each step forward is a victory, no matter how small.

Celebrate Every Win

One of the best ways to shift from a perfectionist mindset to a progress-oriented one is to celebrate every win, no matter how minor it seems. Did your child learn a new Hebrew word in their Hebrew Language Classes Online? Celebrate that! Did they successfully recite a verse from their Bar Mitzvah training? Celebrate that too!

This approach not only helps build confidence but also keeps students motivated to continue learning. At CoolCantor, we encourage students to take pride in their progress, whether they’re learning to read Hebrew in our Online Hebrew Reading Course or preparing for their Bat Mitzvah Lessons.

Embracing Growth

Success isn’t about getting everything right—it’s about improving and learning along the way. Each mistake or challenge is an opportunity for growth. In Jason’s case, he realized that by focusing on his improvement rather than the final score, he could enjoy his achievements and stay motivated for future tests.

This is a lesson I also teach in our Virtual Bar Mitzvah Lessons. Preparing for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a journey, not a race to perfection. It’s about embracing the learning process, from understanding the Torah Portion Lessons Online to building confidence through consistent practice.

The Power of Embracing Progress

When you stop striving for perfection and focus on growth, you open yourself up to new possibilities. You’re more willing to try new things, take risks, and accept challenges. This mindset not only helps students succeed academically but also sets them up for success in life.

For example, during our Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutoring, I often remind students that the goal isn’t to deliver a flawless performance at their Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Instead, the goal is to feel confident, proud, and connected to their Jewish heritage. And when students shift their focus from perfection to progress, they’re more likely to enjoy the process and feel proud of their accomplishments.

Jason’s Journey: From Perfection to Progress

Let’s go back to Jason. After our conversation about focusing on growth rather than perfection, Jason’s entire mindset shifted. He started to take pride in the progress he made, whether it was in his Jewish Studies Online or his other subjects at school. Instead of being disappointed by anything less than perfect, he began to appreciate how far he had come.

This shift also helped Jason as he prepared for his Bar Mitzvah. Rather than stressing about memorizing every line perfectly, he focused on learning and understanding the meaning behind the prayers and the Torah reading. By the time of his Bar Mitzvah, Jason felt confident and proud—not because he was perfect, but because he had made significant progress and grown throughout the process.

Conclusion: Embrace Progress Over Perfection

Perfection is a myth, and chasing it will only cause unnecessary stress. The real key to success lies in progress. Every step forward, no matter how small, is a win. Whether your child is preparing for their Bar Mitzvah or navigating other academic and personal challenges, remind them to focus on growth and celebrate every achievement.

At CoolCantor, we believe in teaching students not just about Hebrew Education Online but also about life lessons that will guide them beyond their Bar or Bat Mitzvah journey. By focusing on progress and celebrating growth, students can develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence that will carry them through life.

So, the next time your child feels down because they didn’t achieve perfection, remind them that they’re making incredible progress—and that’s what really matters.
