Want to Raise a Leader? Teach Them to Stay Curious.

By Cantor Ben
You think you’re good at reading people?
Most of us do.
But let me ask you to picture this:
Your child gets into the car after school. They’re quiet. Head down. You ask how the day
went—and they snap back. One-word answers. Frustrated tone. Distant energy. You think,
“Wow, they’re being rude or disrespectful.”
But here’s another possibility…
Maybe they were humiliated in gym class.
Maybe they bombed a test they studied for all week.
Maybe a friend ignored them at lunch and they’re too embarrassed to say it out loud.
We jump to judgment fast. And when we do, we miss the truth. We miss the moment. We miss
the chance to lead and love with real wisdom.

From Snapping to Safety: Mandy’s Story
I want to tell you about Mandy, one of my Bat Mitzvah students from Boston. Bright, energetic,
and deeply sensitive. Mandy came to the CoolCantor Hebrew School after feeling overwhelmed
in a traditional classroom. She was drowning in expectation—of teachers, peers, and even
herself.
She didn’t need more memorization. She needed self-belief.
Her mom called me after a particularly tough week at school. Mandy had started shutting down.
Pulling away. One-word answers. Frustrated outbursts. Sound familiar?
But instead of labeling her as “difficult,” we tried something different.
In one of our Bat Mitzvah training (online) sessions, I paused the Hebrew lesson and simply
asked:
“Mandy, what’s something you wish more adults understood about you?”
She was quiet for a moment. Then said, “That just because I’m quiet doesn’t mean I don’t care.
I’m just tired from trying to be liked all day.”
That moment changed everything.

Strong Leaders Are Safe People
At CoolCantor, I don’t just teach kids how to chant Torah. I coach them in something far more
powerful:
 How to be emotionally intelligent
 How to lead with empathy
How to create safety for others in conversation
Whether a student is doing Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons, Bar Mitzvah Preparation Online, or my
Life Mastery Course, the foundation is the same:
Stop judging. Start listening.
⸻
Why This Matters in a World of Snap Judgments
Look, we’re all guilty of it. We assume:
• If someone is cold, they’re arrogant.
• If a teen is moody, they’re disrespectful.
• If a child is quiet, they’re uninterested.
But what if they’re scared? Burnt out? Trying their best?
This is why I created the Life Mastery Series Course within CoolCantor—to teach kids how to
lead from the inside out. We explore Torah through real-life applications. In fact, every Weekly
Torah Portion we study becomes a window into the soul.
Not just “what happened,” but “what does this mean for your life?”
That’s why my program blends Torah Portion Coaching, Learn Judaism Online, and the best of
Online Jewish Education with powerful character development.

What Parents Often Get Wrong About Confidence
You might think confidence means raising your hand in class or leading a presentation. But at
CoolCantor, we teach something deeper:
Confidence is the ability to pause and ask, instead of react and assume.
That kind of strength—quiet, steady, and compassionate—starts young. And it’s what turns kids
into leaders, not followers.
Mandy went from overwhelmed to empowered. She learned how to read the room without
absorbing it, how to regulate her feelings, and how to speak up for others in her school
community.
That didn’t happen because I lectured her.
It happened because I asked questions.
And because she learned to ask her own.

CoolCantor Hebrew School: More Than Just a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Program
Whether it’s Online Bat Mitzvah Lessons, Online Hebrew School, or Personalized Bar Mitzvah
Preparation, the structure of the program is customized to fit the needs of each student.
But here’s the deeper truth:
It’s not about perfect Hebrew pronunciation.
It’s about becoming the kind of person who makes others feel seen.
That’s what I coach through:
• Reading Hebrew for Beginners
• Learn to Read Hebrew Online
• Hebrew Language Classes Online
• Bar Mitzvah Classes
• Bat Mitzvah Lesson sessions
• And yes, even Virtual Bar Mitzvah Lessons for students on the go
⸻
What Happens When Kids Don’t Learn This?
If we don’t teach kids to lead with empathy, here’s what can happen:
• They grow into adults who react, not respond.
• They become bosses who demand but don’t develop.
• They enter relationships expecting to be understood, but never offering the same in
return.
The world has enough loud voices. It needs more listening leaders.
At CoolCantor, I help build those leaders—through Torah, through coaching, and through
consistency.

A Word About Adult Students
By the way—this isn’t just for kids. More and more adults are signing up for Adult Bar Mitzvah,
Adult Bat Mitzvah, and Online Jewish Classes to reclaim a part of their identity.
Many tell me they were never offered the chance as children. Others want to reconnect
spiritually. Some simply want to learn Judaism online and apply its lessons to parenting,
leadership, or career.
And guess what? These adults are often the first to say, “I wish someone had taught me this
earlier.”
Well, now we can.
⸻
Final Thought: Leadership Is Built in Small Moments
Back to the car ride. Your child gets in. Quiet. Distant.
Instead of saying, “Why are you being rude?”
Try, “Hey, you seem off—do you want to talk about it?”
That one line could change the entire trajectory of their day—and maybe their week.
Being a strong leader starts with being a safe person. And the world doesn’t just need
smarter kids. It needs more mensch kids.
⸻
If you want your child to be the one who asks, listens, and leads with heart—not just in a Bar
Mitzvah speech, but in life…
Send me a message.
Let’s build something beautiful—together.
Thanks for reading,
Ben
