Why Patience Matters: Transform Your Approach to Challenges and Goals

Adult Jewish Education

Hey everyone! Today, I want to talk about a virtue that’s often overlooked but is incredibly important: patience. Patience allows us to make thoughtful decisions, reduces stress, and often leads to better outcomes. In a world where we’re accustomed to instant gratification, it’s easy to become impatient when things don’t go our way immediately. However, understanding that good things take time and that impulsive actions can have negative consequences can transform your approach to challenges and goals.

The Importance of Patience

Patience is more than just the ability to wait; it’s the ability to maintain a positive attitude while waiting. It’s about trusting the process and having the wisdom to know that some things take time to develop fully. Whether you’re working on personal goals, relationships, or professional achievements, patience is a key factor in long-term success.

My Early Lessons in Patience with Investing

Let me share a personal story about how I learned the importance of patience early on. As a teenager, I started investing in stocks with the help of my parents. I was eager and excited, but also incredibly impatient. I would buy a stock, and if it didn’t go up in the next 10 minutes, I would panic and sell it, especially if it started going down. I was so freaked out about losing money that I never let the investments have time to grow. Needless to say, I didn’t make any money with that approach.

It wasn’t until I started reading books and watching YouTube clips from Warren Buffett that I understood the true nature of investing. Buffett often said that when you buy shares in a great company, you should almost set it and forget it. Of course, you can check in on it periodically, but not obsessively. He compared it to buying a cornfield 100 miles up north—you wouldn’t drive up every single day to see how the corn was growing. You’d check on it every few months, knowing that patience is key to seeing your investment grow.

This lesson taught me that patience is crucial not just in investing, but in life. Good things take time, and the best outcomes often come from those who are willing to wait and trust the process.

Patience in Personal Life: Waiting for the Right Partner

Another significant lesson in patience came in my early 20s when I was surrounded by friends who were getting married. I started to feel jealous and anxious, wondering why I hadn’t found the person I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with. This impatience consumed my thoughts daily, causing me unnecessary stress.

A wise mentor advised me to be patient, to go out and meet new people without the pressure of finding “the one” immediately. He told me to trust that the right person would come along when the time was right. And sure enough, several years after my friends got married, I found my person. We’ve now been married for 10 years and have two beautiful children. Looking back, I realize how crucial patience was in allowing me to find the right partner and build a happy, fulfilling life.

Patience in Jewish Education: Jaiden’s Story

Patience is also a vital lesson I teach my students at CoolCantor. One student who stands out is Jaiden from Toronto. Jaiden came to me for Jewish education and bar mitzvah training through our online Bar Mitzvah lessons. As part of our program, we focus not just on the academic aspects but also on life lessons from the Torah, including the importance of patience.

Jaiden was a bright and eager student, but like many young people, he struggled with the impulse to rush through tasks and see immediate results. Through our Hebrew education online and Bar Mitzvah classes, we worked on developing his patience, teaching him that mastery takes time and that it’s okay to progress step by step.

In addition to learning to read Hebrew and mastering the weekly Torah portion, Jaiden learned valuable life skills such as effective communication, leadership, relationship building, standing up for justice, and empathy. These lessons, infused with Jewish wisdom and life coaching, set him up for success not just on his big day but also in his teen and adult years.

When the day of his Bar Mitzvah arrived, Jaiden excelled. He confidently performed his Torah portion in front of his friends and family, a moment he’ll likely remember for the rest of his life. More importantly, he walked away with a deeper understanding of patience and how it plays a crucial role in achieving long-term success.

The Benefits of Patience

Developing patience can enhance every aspect of your life, from personal relationships to professional achievements. Here are some key benefits:

Thoughtful Decision-Making: Patience allows you to make decisions that are well-considered rather than impulsive. This leads to better outcomes in both personal and professional situations.
Reduced Stress: When you’re patient, you’re less likely to feel rushed or anxious. This can significantly reduce your stress levels and contribute to better mental health.
Better Relationships: Patience fosters understanding and empathy, which are crucial for building and maintaining healthy relationships.
Long-Term Success: Patience is often the key to achieving long-term goals. Whether it’s in your career, personal life, or education, being patient allows you to work steadily toward your objectives without getting discouraged by temporary setbacks.

Conclusion: Embrace Patience in Your Life

Patience is a virtue that can transform your life in profound ways. It allows you to fully appreciate the present and optimizes your efforts for future rewards. Whether you’re investing in stocks, waiting for the right partner, or preparing for your Bar Mitzvah, patience is the key to achieving your goals and living a fulfilling life.

I’d love to hear from you. Tell me about a time when you were impatient and it caused you stress or anxiety. Then, share a time when you exercised patience and it led to an amazing outcome in your life.
