The Confidence Secret No One Talks About: Eye Contact

Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons

Hi, I’m Cantor Ben from Coolcantor Hebrew School. Over the years, I’ve seen parents invest in tutors, coaches, and endless extracurriculars to help their kids succeed. But there’s one skill almost everyone overlooks—eye contact.

Most kids today avoid it. They stare at their phones, mumble into their chest, or look anywhere except into another person’s eyes. And here’s the truth: every time they avoid eye contact, they shrink their confidence, and they shrink their opportunities.

That’s why inside my Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons and Online Bat Mitzvah Lessons, I focus on something most adults can’t even do consistently—eye gazing. It’s not just about being polite. It’s about building presence.

Because when a child can look someone in the eye and hold that gaze, they send an unspoken message: I belong here. I am strong. You can trust me.

And that skill changes everything.

The Story of Dion

Let me tell you about Dion, one of my students from Los Angeles. When he first enrolled in my Bar Mitzvah Classes, his parents said, “He’s bright, but he’s nervous. He hides. He won’t look people in the eye.”

Dion struggled with reading Hebrew at first. Like many beginners, he was shy. But I reminded him that learning how to read Hebrew for beginners is not just about the letters and sounds—it’s about how you show up.

So we started practicing eye contact alongside his Torah Portion Coaching. Each week, as we worked through his Online Jewish Education, I gave him simple challenges:

• Hold eye contact for three seconds while introducing himself.
• Practice looking up after reading a verse from the Weekly Torah Portion.
• Speak directly into the camera during our Zoom sessions.

Slowly, Dion’s posture changed. His voice grew louder. His confidence expanded. By the time he stood at his Bar Mitzvah, people were whispering, “He looks like a leader.”

And that’s the point. A Bar Mitzvah is not just about chanting words. It’s about stepping into adulthood with presence and power.

Why Eye Contact Builds Leaders

Think about it. Would you trust a Life Coach, a teacher, or a boss who couldn’t look you in the eye? Probably not. Eye contact is one of the oldest forms of human communication. It signals trust, strength, and confidence.

When I teach Bar Mitzvah Preparation Online or guide a Bat Mitzvah Lesson, I tell my students:
• Eye contact says, “I respect you.”
• Eye contact says, “I’m not afraid.”
• Eye contact says, “I’m ready.”

This is not just a communication trick. It is a mindset. When kids learn to hold their gaze, they also learn to hold their ground in life.

The Jewish Perspective on Presence

Judaism has always understood the power of presence. When Moses first speaks to God at the burning bush, the Torah says he turned to face the bush fully. He gave his attention. He looked directly at what was in front of him.

This is what I teach in my Judaism Classes Online and Online Jewish Classes. Being present is not about multitasking. It is about showing up with your whole self—eyes, ears, heart, and spirit.

Whether I’m working with kids in Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Training, mentoring adults in an Adult Bar Mitzvah or Adult Bat Mitzvah, or leading families through Adult Jewish Education, the lesson is the same: attention is love. And eye contact is one of the clearest ways to show it.

The CoolCantor Hebrew School Difference

There are many programs out there that promise the Best Hebrew Course, or the fastest way to Learn Hebrew Language. But at CoolCantor, we go deeper.

Yes, we teach kids how to Learn to Read Hebrew Online with my Hebrew Language Learning Program. Yes, we offer Personalized Bar Mitzvah Preparation, Virtual Bar Mitzvah Lessons, and full Online Jewish Studies Programs.

But here’s what makes us different: we combine Hebrew Education Online with life mastery. Through my Life Mastery Series Course, I help kids connect their Torah Portion Study not just to history, but to modern leadership.

Because if a child can master eye contact, posture, and presence during their Bar Mitzvah training, they carry that strength into school, friendships, and eventually, their careers.

The Transformation Parents Want

Parents often come to me saying, “We just want him to get through the Torah Portion” or “We hope she can memorize her Bat Mitzvah training (online).” But then something bigger happens.

When their child learns to look people in the eye, stand tall, and speak with clarity, parents say:

• “She’s more confident in class now.”
• “He answers questions without shrinking.”
• “They’re showing up like leaders.”

This is why I believe Online Jewish Education must go beyond memorization. It must prepare kids for life.

Action Steps for Parents

Here are three practical ways you can start building this skill with your child at home:

1. Dinner Table Eye Gazing
When you sit down for dinner, have each family member look at one another and share something about their day—while maintaining eye contact.

2. Read and Look Up
Have your child practice reading a line from a book or their Torah Portion. After finishing, ask them to look up and make eye contact before continuing.

3. Compliment with Connection
When your child gives or receives a compliment, make sure they are looking the other person in the eyes. This makes kindness feel powerful and real.

Why This Matters

Dion’s story from LA proves it. When a child learns eye contact, everything changes. He came into CoolCantor nervous and quiet. He left standing tall, leading prayers, and showing everyone he was ready for adulthood.

And that’s why I say: at CoolCantor Hebrew School, we don’t just teach kids to chant a portion. We teach them to lead.

So ask yourself—do you want your child to shrink from life, or step into it with confidence?

Final Thought

Eye contact is the most under-valued leadership skill your child can learn today. It is not about being loud. It is about being present.

And the world listens to those who are present.

👉 Message me today if you want your child to be the one people listen to—not the one people overlook.

Thanks,
Ben
