Stop Chasing Others—Teach Your Child to Lead from Within

Most parents say they want their kids to be happy, resilient, and confident.
Yet so often, they raise them to live on
expectations—expectations from teachers, friends, coaches, or even
strangers scrolling by online.
Here’s the truth: Expectations are the enemy of peace.
When happiness depends on what others do—or do n’t-your child is setting themselves up for disappointment.
That’s why in my Bar and Bat Mitzvah coaching at
CoolCantor, I don’t just teach kids how to chant a Torah portion. I
teach them how to:
• Own their voice
• Detach from outside approval
• Build confidence from the inside out
Because the earlier they learn this, the stronger they stand when life doesn’t go their way.
Let me show you how it works—in and out of the Zoom room.
⸻
🚀 Step 1: Identify the Expectation Trap
The first step is awareness.
Ask your child:
• “What are you doing because others expect it?”
• “When do you feel pressure to please?”
In our online Bar Mitzvah lessons, we talk openly about the difference between what they want and what they feel they should do.
That distinction is essential for growing self-led, not people-pleasing.
⸻
🗣️ Step 2: Teach Them to Say, “This Is My Voice”
Mia, one of my students from San Diego, was a bright
12-year-old preparing for her Bat Mitzvah lesson. But she felt stuck:
She wanted to include her love of environmental science in her Bar
Mitzvah speech, but worried her coach would say it’s “too different.”
So we practiced. We role-played, she found the words, she owned her message.
On the big day, Mia stood under the chuppah of her
ceremony—read her weekly Torah portion—and spoke confidently about
climate care. She didn’t seek applause. She spoke from conviction. And
she moved the crowd.
That moment wasn’t just about Hebrew recitation—it was about claiming her authentic voice.
⸻
💪 Step 3: Reinforce Internal Confidence, Not External Validation
Here’s how to help your child grow confidence that lasts:
1. Praise Effort, Not Outcome
“I noticed how much you practiced, and that matters more than a flawless delivery.”
2. Ask Reflection Questions
“How did it feel when you spoke your truth today?”
“Where did you feel proud of yourself?”
3. Teach Them to Self-Comfort
When they feel anxious, guide them to say: “I trust my inner voice.”
That’s the kind of confidence we build in our bar mitzvah training.
⸻
📚 Step 4: Tie Confidence to Jewish Learning
We use Jewish wisdom to reinforce this mindset:
• “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:9)
→ Courage comes from within, not from others’ approval.
• Stories of Moses and Esther
→ Leaders who acted even when alone, afraid, and highly visible.
In our Jewish studies online classes, these examples connect Bar/Bat Mitzvah moments to lifelong confidence.
⸻
🖥️ Step 5: Simulate Real-World Pressure
In virtual Bar Mitzvah lessons, we rehearse under
distraction. We ask kids to deliver prayers or learn to read Hebrew
while facing critique, technical glitches, or background noise.
Why? Because building internal confidence means performing when it matters—even when it’s imperfect.
⸻
🌟 Mia’s Story: Confidence in Action
Mia approached her Bar Mitzvah speech like she was auditioning for conformity. But we shifted gears:
• She chose a topic she felt strongly about—environment and Jewish stewardship.
• We crafted a D’var Torah that connected her passion to the weekly Torah portion.
• We rehearsed it in our online Jewish classes, focusing on presence, tone, and owning her message.
On the day, Mia’s confidence wasn’t about perfection—it was about purpose. And her voice resonated because it was hers entirely.
