Raise a Confident Leader Like Joseph With Online Jewish Education That Works
A few weeks ago, I stepped out of a grocery store and saw something that stopped me in my tracks. A man and a woman were sitting on the sidewalk, playing soft music. Their kids were beside them. A handwritten sign leaned against their open case:
“Please help us feed our kids.”
Now, some people may walk past and think, “Why aren’t they working?” But I didn’t walk by. I stopped. Not because I’m a hero—but because I believe in looking deeper.
Maybe they can’t work.
Maybe trauma, illness, or life circumstances have made it impossible.
Maybe they’re doing the best they can with what they’ve got.
I reached into my pocket and gave them what I could. Nothing huge. But when I handed the bill to the mother, she locked eyes with me, blew a kiss, and whispered:
“God bless you.”
In that moment, the story didn’t matter. The judgment didn’t matter.
One human saw another human. And reached out.

Lesson: What This Has to Do With Bar and Bat Mitzvahs
I share this story not to pat myself on the back—but to explain something that parents often miss when they’re searching for Bar or Bat Mitzvah training.
Many families think the most important thing their child will learn is how to chant a Torah Portion.
And yes, I teach that. I run one of the Best Hebrew Courses online. Students in my program Learn to Read Hebrew with personalized coaching and feedback. We study the Weekly Torah Portion with depth. They prepare confidently for their Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
But that’s not what makes my program transformational.
What makes it transformational… is this:
I teach kids how to become mensches.
People who show up with kindness, courage, and character—even when no one’s watching.
Because the world is hard. But our kids don’t have to be.
And at Coolcantor Hebrew School, I make sure they’re not.

Meet Andy: From Shy Student to Soulful Leader
One of my students, Andy from West Virginia, started his journey feeling nervous. He was quiet, unsure of his Hebrew skills, and doubted whether he could ever stand up and lead a service.
But Andy had something else: a huge heart.
Each week, through our Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons, we didn’t just study the Torah Portion. We reflected on what it meant to care for people who are vulnerable, to stand up for what’s right, and to notice those who are invisible.
One day, Andy told me about a boy in his class being bullied. Normally, he’d freeze. But he said, “This time, I remembered what we talked about, and I sat next to him at lunch. I just wanted him to feel like he mattered.”
That’s what Bar Mitzvah training is really about.
Not just prayers. Not just melodies.
But values. Integrity. Compassion.
Andy did eventually chant beautifully on his Bar Mitzvah day. But what made his parents cry the most?
The part of his speech where he talked about becoming the kind of person who notices others and reaches out.

Action Steps: Try This With Your Child
This week, invite your child into a simple but powerful challenge:
1. Notice Someone Who’s Ignored
It could be the quiet student at school. Or the elderly neighbor who never gets visitors. Ask: “How can you make their day brighter?”
2. Give Without Expecting Back
Whether it’s a small donation, a smile, or a compliment—encourage them to offer something just to be kind.
3. Reflect as a Family
Over dinner, talk about what it feels like to see someone and be seen. Ask: “Who made you feel important this week? Who did you make feel important?”
⸻
Final Thought: Teaching More Than Torah
In Judaism, we say:
“The world stands on three things: Torah, Avodah (service), and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of lovingkindness).”
At Coolcantor, I believe in all three.
Yes, your child will learn their Torah Portion. Yes, they’ll master the prayers.
But most importantly?
They’ll learn how to be human.
How to care.
How to lead.
How to live with soul.
That’s the Bar or Bat Mitzvah I prepare them for.
Not just the ceremony.
The life.
