Overwhelm is a Choice. Fear is a Habit. Here’s How to Break Free.

Bat Mitzvah

Why Fear and Overwhelm Keep Us Stuck

Overwhelm is a choice. Fear is a habit. And most people stay stuck because they refuse to see the truth—neither of them are real.

That might sound harsh, but stay with me. We’ve been conditioned to believe that fear is an immovable wall, that overwhelm is an unavoidable reality. But the truth? They’re illusions—self-imposed barriers that only have power if we let them.

At CoolCantor Hebrew School, I work with students facing fear and overwhelm all the time. Whether it’s learning Hebrew, preparing for a Bar Mitzvah, or tackling a Weekly Torah Portion, every student I teach encounters a moment where they think, I can’t do this. But here’s the thing—fear is the biggest liar they’ll ever meet.

Mara’s Story: Overcoming Fear and Overwhelm

Mara, one of my students from Toronto, was preparing for her Bat Mitzvah. She was smart, driven, and committed to mastering her Torah Portion—but the pressure was crushing her.

“I can’t do this,” she told me one day, close to tears. “There’s too much to learn. I’m going to mess up.”

I looked at her and said, “Fear is lying to you right now. It’s telling you that you’re not ready when, in reality, you’ve put in the work. You know this. The only thing left to do is trust yourself.”

She wasn’t convinced. She had let fear become her habit—second-guessing herself, focusing on what could go wrong instead of what she was capable of.

But I reminded her: fear is just like lifting weights. If something feels heavy, that doesn’t mean you can’t lift it. It just means you need to build more strength.

The same is true for confidence. The only way to get stronger is to keep showing up, even when fear tells you to quit.

Mara pushed through. She kept practicing, kept showing up, kept proving to herself that she was ready. And when the day of her Bat Mitzvah Ceremony arrived, she stood on the bimah, took a deep breath, and owned it.

Not because the fear disappeared—but because she didn’t let it stop her.

Breaking Down the Fear and Overwhelm Cycle

Let’s get real—overwhelm isn’t about having too much to do. It’s about not knowing where to start.

The same goes for fear. Fear isn’t a stop sign—it’s a GPS. It’s pointing exactly where you need to go to grow.

Step 1: Reframe Your Perspective

Most people think fear means stop. But the most successful people in the world? They see fear as a sign that they’re stepping into something important.

If you never feel fear, you’re not pushing yourself. If you never feel overwhelmed, you’re not growing.

Step 2: Break It Down into Small Steps

Feeling stuck because there’s too much on your plate? Do this:

✅ Choose the very first action you can take.
✅ Forget about doing everything—just do the next thing.
✅ Celebrate small wins.

If you’re preparing for your Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons, don’t stress about the whole Torah Portion at once. Just focus on learning one verse today.

If you’re trying to Learn Hebrew Language, don’t panic about mastering the alphabet overnight. Start with just five letters.

Small steps make big goals feel possible.

Step 3: Shift from Fear to Excitement

Here’s something crazy—fear and excitement feel the same in your body.

Think about it: racing heart, sweaty palms, adrenaline pumping. The only difference is the story you tell yourself.

Instead of saying, I’m scared, try saying, I’m excited.

Try it. It changes everything.

Why Most People Stay Stuck

Most people never push through fear because they think they need to feel ready before they act.

But here’s the truth: you’ll never feel ready.

Readiness isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision.

The moment you stop waiting to feel ready and start taking action anyway—that’s when everything changes.

Fear and Overwhelm in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Journey

A Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah is one of the biggest moments in a young person’s life. It’s exciting, meaningful, and—for many—completely overwhelming.

I hear it all the time from my students in Online Bat Mitzvah Lessons:

❌ “What if I forget my Torah Portion?”
❌ “What if I mess up in front of my family?”
❌ “What if I don’t live up to expectations?”

Here’s what I tell them:

✔ Fear doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you care.
✔ The only way to be confident is to take action before you feel ready.
✔ You are already more prepared than you think—you just need to trust yourself.

At CoolCantor Hebrew School, I don’t just teach Hebrew Education Online or Virtual Bar Mitzvah Lessons—I teach confidence. I teach students how to push through fear and show up for themselves.

Your Challenge: Break Free from Fear and Overwhelm

I want you to take a moment and reflect on this:

👉 What’s one thing fear has been holding you back from?
👉 What’s one action—no matter how small—you can take today to move forward?

Maybe you’ve been putting off signing up for Online Jewish Classes because you’re afraid you won’t be good at it. Maybe you’ve been holding yourself back from Bat Mitzvah Training because you think it’s too late.

Whatever it is, take one step. The moment you take action, you’ll see that fear and overwhelm were never real obstacles—they were just illusions.

Final Thought: Master Your Mind, Master Your Life

Fear and overwhelm only have power if you let them stop you. The moment you step forward, you prove to yourself that you’re stronger than the fear itself.

You don’t have to feel ready.
You don’t have to be fearless.
You just have to take action.

What’s one fear you’ve faced that made you stronger? Drop it below 👇—your story might be exactly what someone else needs to hear today.

And if you or your child are preparing for a Bar Mitzvah, looking for Hebrew Language Classes Online, or need guidance through the Weekly Torah Portion, I’d love to help. At CoolCantor Hebrew School, we don’t just teach lessons—we build confidence for life.
