My Child Is Kind But Struggles To Stand Up For Themselves. Can Jewish Learning Help?

Every parent hopes their child will grow up to be kind.
But many parents quietly worry about something else.
- “My child is so kind that other kids take advantage of them.”
- “They never want to upset anyone.”
- “They say yes even when they want to say no.”
- “They come home upset because someone treated them unfairly, but they never spoke up.”
If those words sound familiar, you are far from alone.
As a Life Coach, these are some of the most emotional conversations I have with parents.
They are proud that their son or daughter is compassionate.
At the same time, they worry that kindness without confidence can leave a child vulnerable.
One student who immediately comes to mind is Roy from Dallas.
Roy was:
- Thoughtful.
- Respectful.
- Generous.
He cared deeply about other people.
But he struggled to stand up for himself.
His parents were not looking for someone who could simply prepare him for his Bar Mitzvah.
They were searching for someone who could help him discover his own voice.
That is exactly why I built Coolcantor Hebrew School differently.
Kindness Should Never Mean Becoming Invisible
There is a misunderstanding many children develop.
They believe being kind means:
- Always agreeing.
- Always staying quiet.
- Always putting everyone else’s feelings ahead of their own.
That is not kindness.
That is fear disguised as kindness.
Real kindness includes:
- Honesty.
- Healthy boundaries.
- Respect.
- Courage.
Children deserve to learn that they can be compassionate without becoming people pleasers.
That lesson can change an entire life.
The Torah Teaches Courage Alongside Compassion
One reason I love teaching the Weekly Torah Portion Coaching is that the Torah never presents kindness as weakness.
- Moses stood up to Pharaoh.
- Esther found the courage to speak when remaining silent would have been easier.
- Joseph forgave his brothers without pretending they had done nothing wrong.
- Abraham showed incredible hospitality while remaining true to his beliefs.
Again and again, the Torah teaches children that strength and kindness belong together.
Every Weekly Torah Portion becomes an opportunity to discuss real situations children face every day.
- What do you do when someone excludes you?
- How do you respond when someone pressures you?
- How do you disagree respectfully?
- How do you protect your own values?
These conversations become just as important as learning Hebrew.
Roy’s Biggest Challenge
Roy rarely got into arguments.
At first glance, that sounded wonderful.
Then his parents shared what was really happening.
He:
- Avoided conflict because he was afraid people would stop liking him.
- Allowed classmates to interrupt him.
- Struggled to express disagreement.
- Often came home frustrated because he had not said what he really wanted to say.
Many children experience this.
They confuse keeping the peace with losing their voice.
I Coach The Child Not Just The Curriculum
Parents often search for Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons, Online Bat Mitzvah Lessons, Hebrew Education, Bar Mitzvah Classes, or the Best Hebrew Course because they want their child prepared for the ceremony.
They certainly receive that.
Students:
- Learn Hebrew Language.
- Learn to Read Hebrew.
- Strengthen Reading Hebrew for Beginners.
- Prepare their Torah Portion.
- Receive Torah Portion Coaching.
- Make steady progress through Bar Mitzvah Preparation Online.
But I believe children deserve much more than memorization.
They deserve transformation.
That is where my work as a Life Coach naturally becomes part of every lesson.
Practicing Real Life Conversations
With Roy, we spent time practicing situations that happened at school.
- How do you tell someone to stop interrupting?
- How do you politely disagree?
- How do you say no without feeling guilty?
- How do you respond when someone pressures you?
- How do you speak calmly even when you feel nervous?
These conversations became just as valuable as preparing his prayers.
Because one day the ceremony would end.
Life would continue.
Confidence Comes From Experience
One of the biggest myths about confidence is that children either have it or they do not.
That simply is not true.
Confidence is built.
Every time a child:
- Speaks up.
- Expresses an opinion.
- Respectfully protects a boundary.
- Accomplishes something difficult.
Confidence grows.
That is why a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah can become such an extraordinary opportunity.
Children repeatedly prove to themselves that they are capable.
The Life Lessons From The Torah Difference
At Coolcantor Hebrew School, I intentionally connect Jewish learning with everyday life.
We discuss:
- Friendship.
- Leadership.
- Communication.
- Resilience.
- Entrepreneurship.
- Peer pressure.
- Integrity.
- Responsibility.
- Kindness.
- Courage.
Students begin seeing Judaism not simply as history.
They begin seeing it as practical guidance for becoming remarkable human beings.
That is what makes the experience so different.
Roy’s Breakthrough
Several months into the program, Roy’s parents told me about something that happened at school.
A classmate interrupted him during a group project.
Normally Roy would have stayed quiet.
Instead he calmly said,
“I was not finished speaking.”
There was:
- No yelling.
- No anger.
- No disrespect.
Just confidence.
His classmates listened.
His teacher noticed.
Most importantly, Roy noticed.
He realized he could stand up for himself while still being kind.
That lesson was worth far more than perfect pronunciation.
Preparing Children For Life
Families today appreciate flexibility.
Students complete Online Jewish Education and Online Hebrew School lessons from home.
Many also choose optional weekly Zoom sessions with one of our kind and supportive teachers.
Whether students are participating in:
- Personalized Bar Mitzvah Preparation
- Bat Mitzvah Training Online
- Learn to Read Hebrew Online
- Online Jewish Classes
- Judaism Classes Online
Every lesson is designed to strengthen both character and confidence.
Parents are often surprised by how much growth occurs beyond Hebrew.
These Lessons Never Stop Mattering
The same principles help adults too.
Students pursuing:
- Adult Bar Mitzvah
- Adult Bat Mitzvah
- Adult Jewish Education
- Bat Mitzvah For Adults
- Bar mitzvah for adults
- Learn Judaism Online
Frequently discover they are strengthening confidence as well.
That is why the Life Mastery Series Course and Life Mastery Course are such an important part of my overall philosophy.
Learning never stops.
Growth never stops.
Confidence never stops developing.
Why Families Choose Me
Many Hebrew schools teach information.
I help children become stronger people.
That difference changes everything.
Parents are not simply looking for someone who can teach prayers.
They are looking for someone who:
- Understands childhood.
- Sees potential instead of problems.
- Believes every child deserves to become confident, resilient, compassionate, and courageous.
That is exactly what I strive to provide every family at Coolcantor Hebrew School.
A Final Thought
If your child is kind but struggles to stand up for themselves, please know this.
Kindness is a beautiful quality.
It simply needs confidence standing beside it.
Roy from Dallas reminded me that children do not have to choose between being compassionate and being courageous.
They can become both.
A Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah can become much more than learning prayers.
It can become the moment your child discovers:
- That their voice matters.
- That they are allowed to speak.
- That they are allowed to set healthy boundaries.
- That they are allowed to lead with kindness while also standing tall.
That is the transformation I hope every child experiences at Coolcantor Hebrew School.
Because my goal has never been simply to prepare children for one extraordinary day.
My goal is to help them become the kind of confident, compassionate leaders who will positively influence every classroom, every friendship, every workplace, every family, and every community they become part of for the rest of their lives.
