Jeremy’s Odyssey: How Jewish Learning and Flexible Education Shaped a Young Swimmer

Written by Cantor Ben
Hello all,
I’m thrilled to tell you about the transformative tale of Jeremy, one of my students. His experience in our online Bar Mitzvah training program exemplifies the profound influence of Torah teachings on the development of young individuals.
The Virtue of Kindness: Lesson One
In the Torah, the principle of “Chesed,” or benevolence, is a recurring theme. Jeremy, an avid competitive swimmer, grasped the essence of this lesson. He took the teachings from our Bar Mitzvah classes and volunteered at a community center, imparting swimming skills to younger children.
Fostering Connections: Wisdom from the Torah
The Torah is a treasure trove of wisdom on nurturing relationships. Through our Jewish Studies Courses, Jeremy and I explored the weekly Torah portion that delves into interpersonal connections. This knowledge fortified his relationships with his swim team members and mentors.
Articulate Communication: Inspired by Moses
Moses was not merely a leader; he was a master communicator. Our virtual Bar Mitzvah lessons included insights from Moses’ experiences. Jeremy applied these lessons to enhance his communication abilities, both in his swimming competitions and during his time at Hebrew school and became a more confident and effective speaker at school, at swim, and with his family and friends.
Upholding Justice: A Fundamental Jewish Tenet
The concept of “Tzedek,” or justice, is integral to the Torah. In our online Hebrew schooling sessions, we examined narratives that focus on justice. Inspired, Jeremy initiated a mitzvah project, establishing an endowed scholarship at his swim academy to assist those who couldn’t afford the fees.
Leading by Example: Torah-Guided Leadership
Leadership qualities are deeply embedded in Torah teachings. Through our online Hebrew school program, Jeremy learned about eminent Jewish leaders and applied these lessons to assume a leadership role within his swim team. He was able to be empathetic and kind and speak to a struggling team member. He learned about at home family issues, gave kind advice, and motivated his teammate to excel at swim. All because Jeremy cared – a quality of a great leader.
Advantages of Asynchronous Learning
Being a competitive swimmer, Jeremy found our asynchronous Bar Mitzvah preparation classes to be incredibly convenient. This approach allowed him to partake in online Bar Mitzvah lessons, engage in Hebrew language classes online, and even complete an online Hebrew reading course at his leisure. He learned life lessons from the Torah that he could take and apply to his life – lessons on leadership, kindness, effective communication, relationship building and so much more!
The Chain Reaction of Kindness
Jeremy’s scholarship initiative exemplifies the chain reaction of kindness, a concept I consistently emphasize. It’s more than a mitzvah; it’s a mechanism to perpetuate positive change.
Family’s Role in Hebrew Education
Family involvement is pivotal in any Hebrew education online program. Jeremy’s family actively participated in our online Jewish studies program and weekly Torah portion study, enriching his overall learning experience. They spoke around the dinner table or while sitting in traffic about the weekly Life Lesson from the Torah – and as a family, they grew together.
The Evolving Landscape of Online Jewish Learning
As we advance, the need for online Bar/Bat Mitzvah training and Hebrew language learning programs will likely increase. Our virtual Hebrew school program offers a well-rounded curriculum, from Judaism 101, Life Lessons from the Torah, basic Hebrew reading to advanced Jewish studies courses. The convenience and adaptability of asynchronous learning make it an excellent option for modern families.
