I’m Christian – Will You Teach Me ?

When I started Coolcantor.com I thought that it would be a bar and bat mitzvah preparation service that I offer to people across North America. And that’s definitely how it started. And then it evolved into offering Jewish education, comparable to Hebrew school online to my students so that they not only learned and mastered how to sing a Torah portion in front of loving family and friends, but they also learned about their history as a Jewish people, lessons from the Torah to help make them into great human beings, extract the meaning from each and every Jewish holiday and lessons from each holiday that they can apply to their every day lives. For example, we learned about the day of atonement called Yom Kippur. We learn about forgiveness and how when you forgive someone who has hurt you, it not only does something for that person, but it’s very liberating and freeing to have that weight off of your back as well. It’s very healthy to forgive those who have hurt us. Never in 1 million years would I imagine that I would get a call from my website like I got today. And that was from a Christian family who has discovered Judaism, and found the religion to be so beautiful and moving that they would like me to teach all of them, mother, father, and two daughters. In our conversation I shared that Jewish people are meant to be a light unto the nations. This does not mean that we are better than anyone else, but we were given the 10 Commandments with a responsibility to share lots of beauty with the world. How to be generous, how to help those who are less fortunate, how to fund research that will hopefully help find cures to diseases and many problems that currently do not have solutions.
This family said that when they used to hang Christmas lights that it something just felt wrong, and that they always envied Jewish homes who had a menorah on the windowsill. I spoke about the beauty of the menorah, and spoke about how on the first night one candle is illuminated, and it’s beautiful, but as you progress and hit the eighth night , you see the light multiplied eight times – it really is comparable to how we do Jewish people are supposed to spread kindness and goodness one kind action at a time and use the multiplier or compound effect so that other people will spread the joy and love into this world. Many rabbis have spoken about this and it’s my pleasure to teach Judaism online to not just bar and bat mitzvah students but anyone who wishes to learn about the beauty that is a Judaism.
