I Have Your Back Sis

    Have Your Back Sis

“Me and my sister are literally homies for life”. This is what my online bat mitzvah student said recently as part of her speech at her bat mitzvah. My student spoke about sisterly love. With respect to sisters – let’s be real here — she completes you, and you wouldn’t want anyone else by your side through the ups and downs of life. It may have taken some time for your relationship to be what it is today, but you got there. Sometimes the two of you still fight, but for the most part, you get along great and have each other’s backs. But being mature isn’t all it takes to keep you and your sis best friends for life — there are more things that sisters can do to stay close.

As easy as it looks from the outside, you probably know from experience that it takes work for you and your sister to stay as close as you are. It’s the best relationship in your life for a reason, and it’s because it takes effort on both ends. The two of you make it look easy, but the truth is that it’s so much easier to bicker than it is to be friends — but being friends is what makes it worth it.

So if you’re BFFs with your sis, you appreciate truth: All sister duos know what it takes to keep you two together when other things are pulling you apart. After all, even maintaining a friendship with your sis takes time.

My online student said as part of her CoolCantor Jewish education, that they always have each other’s backs – when someone is picking on or being mean, my student sticks up for and confronts the mean girl/s and defends her sister. She will also include her in plans to go out so her sister isn’t staying home on the weekend feeling sad and lonely with nothing to do.

She praises her sister in front of her parents – showing that it’s not about making her parents always proud of her accomplishments, but ensuring that her parents know how awesome her sister is.

My online bat mitzvah student learned not only to sing her Torah portion confidently, she learned lessons from the Torah on relationship building and strengthening sibling bonds. It was important for my student and her parents that CoolCantor online Jewish education provide lessons and education that their daughter wasn’t receiving at Hebrew school.

May my student and her sister remain loving and close forever – and I extend a similar wish to you and your sibling.
