How to Stop FOMO from Controlling Your Decisions

Torah Portion Coaching

Let’s face it—FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is something we’ve all experienced. Whether it’s seeing others post about their luxurious vacations, fancy cars, or hearing about a “can’t-miss” investment opportunity, FOMO can trick us into making decisions that aren’t really in our best interest. It’s that nagging feeling that if we don’t act right now, we’ll miss out on something big.

But here’s the truth: FOMO is a trap. It convinces us that we need to chase what everyone else is doing, pushing us to make impulsive decisions without really thinking them through. In this blog, we’ll explore the dangers of FOMO, how to recognize it, and most importantly, how to avoid making decisions that are based on fear rather than wisdom.

A Student’s Struggle with FOMO: The Lamborghini Scam

One of my students, Brian from North Carolina, came to me devastated. He had seen a teenager on Instagram flaunting a Lamborghini, claiming that he had bought it with crypto money. The post promised a quick and easy path to wealth, and my student, eager to achieve the same success, put all of his savings into cryptocurrency without doing proper research. He was so driven by FOMO—afraid that he would miss out on the “next big thing”—that he didn’t stop to consider the risks. Sadly, he lost everything. The Instagram guy? Total scammer.

It’s heartbreaking to see teens compare themselves to these fake social media fantasies. They chase illusions, feeling ‘less than’ because they don’t measure up. I told Brian, “Your worth isn’t about flashy cars or quick money. It’s about your values, your grit, and your journey.” This is the power of FOMO—it convinces us that we’re missing out on something incredible and causes us to rush into decisions that don’t align with our true values or goals.

Unfortunately, Brian isn’t the only one who has fallen into the FOMO trap. Social media is full of people flaunting unrealistic lifestyles, most of which are either exaggerated or outright false. These illusions make us feel like we’re missing out on something bigger and better, which leads to poor decision-making.

My Own Experience with FOMO

I’ll be honest—I’m not immune to FOMO either. As an adult, I’ve fallen victim to it myself. I remember a time when I was scrolling through YouTube and saw a guy who claimed to have figured out the “secret sauce” to stock trading. He was offering a course for $700, pretty much guaranteeing that his method would lead to financial success.

At that point in my life, I was in a vulnerable place. My job had ended, and I hadn’t fully launched CoolCantor online yet. I was looking for a way to provide for my family, and the idea of a quick financial fix was tempting. Even though deep down, I knew the old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” FOMO got the best of me. I purchased the course, followed the advice, and ended up losing money on every stock I bought.

It was a harsh lesson, but one that taught me a lot about patience, research, and avoiding the FOMO trap. As my dad used to say, “Fools and their money are easily parted.”

How to Avoid the FOMO Trap

So, how do we avoid falling into the FOMO trap? The key lies in self-awareness and patience. Here are some strategies I’ve learned along the way:

1.Recognize FOMO When It Hits: The first step to beating FOMO is recognizing when it’s happening. When you see something that makes you feel like you need to act quickly or you’ll miss out, take a step back. Ask yourself if the decision you’re about to make is based on your values, or if you’re just trying to keep up with others.

2.Pause and Reflect: Whenever you feel the pressure to act impulsively, pause. Ask yourself these key questions:
◦ Is this decision in line with my long-term goals, or am I just chasing a short-term win?
◦ Do I have all the information I need to make a smart decision, or am I acting on impulse?
◦ What’s the worst that could happen if I miss out on this opportunity?

3.Taking a moment to reflect can help you avoid making decisions you’ll regret later.

4.Focus on Your Own Journey: The biggest antidote to FOMO is recognizing that your path is unique. You don’t need to compare your journey to someone else’s highlight reel. Most of what you see online is curated, exaggerated, or simply false. Focus on your own growth and success. The only person you need to impress is yourself.

5.Build Resilience and Patience: Success isn’t built through quick schemes or chasing what others have. It comes from grit, hard work, and patience. Take the time to develop your own strengths and values, and trust that your journey will lead you to the right destination. Remember, the real goal is to focus on your journey, learn from your mistakes, and build resilience.

What You Can Learn from Brian’s Mistake

Brian’s story is a classic example of what happens when we let FOMO take control. He was so focused on what someone else had—an illusion on Instagram—that he lost sight of his own values and rushed into a decision that cost him dearly.
But Brian’s experience is also a powerful reminder that setbacks are opportunities for growth. After his experience, we talked about how to make decisions that align with his values, rather than chasing quick wins. He learned that real success doesn’t come from flashy cars or get-rich-quick schemes, but from hard work, determination, and resilience.

Conclusion: Take Control of Your Decisions

In a world where social media constantly bombards us with images of “perfect” lives, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. But the truth is, most of what you see online is an illusion. The only way to avoid the FOMO trap is to focus on your own journey, make decisions that align with your values, and have the patience to build something meaningful over time.

Now, I want to hear from you. Tell me about a time when FOMO got the best of you, or when you jumped at an opportunity too quickly and paid the price. No shame, no judgment—just a chance to learn together and grow stronger.
