How to Spot a Fake Friend: A Life Lesson Every Jewish Teen Needs

Judaism Classes Online

Hi, I’m Cantor Ben.

At CoolCantor Hebrew School, I do a lot more than prepare students for their Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah. I help them prepare for life. I teach confidence. I teach emotional intelligence. I teach how to protect your energy—especially from fake friends.

And this week, I want to share a lesson that changed everything for one of my students, Charlie from Los Angeles.

“Charlie, I Know You’re Hurt. But Let Me Ask You Something…”

Charlie was enrolled in my Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons when he brought up something weighing heavily on his heart. His words were rushed, but the pain was real:

“Cantor Ben, my friend said something awful about me behind my back. I don’t get it—we were fine just last week.”

I let Charlie talk it out, and then I asked him one question that shifted his whole perspective:

“Has this friend ever talked badly about someone else to you?”

Charlie paused. “Yeah… a bunch of times.”

And that’s when I shared this truth:
If they gossip to you, they will gossip about you.

It’s a red flag dressed as “being close.” A dangerous trap disguised as a friendship.

This is one of the most important life lessons I teach through my Online Jewish Education programs. It’s not just about Torah—it’s about using Torah wisdom to thrive in real life.

⸻

Jewish Wisdom Meets Modern Friendship

In Judaism Classes Online at CoolCantor, we study the Weekly Torah Portion, but we don’t just read it. We live it. One lesson we dive deep into is the power of words.

The Torah says:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21)

Think about that. Gossip isn’t just “venting.” It’s harmful. It damages reputations. It breaks trust. It poisons relationships. It disconnects us from our values and our best selves.

That’s why I teach students like Charlie that your Bar Mitzvah isn’t just about chanting a Torah Portion. It’s about becoming a leader. A protector. Someone who knows how to guard both their words—and their heart.

⸻

Confidence Isn’t Just What You Say—It’s Who You Keep Close

In Bar Mitzvah Classes and Bat Mitzvah Lessons, I remind students:
Confidence isn’t built in isolation. It’s reinforced by the people you surround yourself with.

Here’s what fake friends do:
• Celebrate you in front of others—but criticize you behind closed doors.
• Cheer when you struggle—but get silent when you shine.
• “Support” you—but secretly compete with you.

And here’s what real friends do:
• Defend your name—even when you’re not in the room.
• Celebrate your wins—even when they’re still waiting on theirs.
• Speak truth to you—with love, not with cruelty.

That’s why one of the things we work on in Virtual Bar Mitzvah Lessons is what I call a Friend Filter:

Don’t just judge people by how they treat you—judge them by how they talk about others when they think it’s safe.

That’s the mirror. That’s the truth.

⸻

How Charlie Took Back His Power

After our talk, Charlie began to notice patterns.

He realized that this “friend” constantly talked badly about others and was quick to make jokes at someone’s expense. But when Charlie had a big win—a personal best in school—this same friend barely said a word.

No celebration. No high five. Just… silence.

Charlie finally said, “Cantor Ben, I get it now. He wasn’t actually rooting for me.”

With that clarity, Charlie made a courageous decision. He distanced himself. And soon, he began forming friendships that were based on mutual respect—not competition.

His Bar Mitzvah training became more than just a ritual. It became a transformation.

⸻

Lessons From Torah… and Life Coaching

As a Life Coach and Bar Mitzvah rabbi-style mentor (though I’m a Cantor, not a Rabbi), I blend the ancient with the modern.

CoolCantor Hebrew School’s Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutoring is built around this unique combination:
✅ Online Hebrew Reading Course
✅ Hebrew Language Classes Online
✅ Torah Portion Lessons Online
✅ And weekly coaching on confidence, friendships, and mindset.

We use Jewish Studies Courses and Hebrew Education Online not just to prepare students for their ceremony—but to help them lead with clarity in a confusing world.

We also support adults through Adult Jewish Education, Bar mitzvah for adults, and Bat Mitzvah For Adults, all with the same goal: to live with integrity.

⸻

Try This With Your Child This Week:

Here are three conversation starters from our Online Jewish Classes you can use at dinner tonight:

– “What’s one thing a real friend does that a fake one doesn’t?”
Help your child spot healthy vs. toxic dynamics.
– “Have you ever seen someone talk badly about another person? How did it make you feel?”
Teach them to tune in to their gut.
– “If your friend wins at something, how do you react?”
Use this moment to reinforce celebrating others instead of comparing. These aren’t just nice ideas. They are essential skills I coach in every Online Hebrew School lesson.

⸻

Final Thought

Charlie’s story isn’t unique. Every student—whether in Los Angeles, Toronto, or Miami—faces friendship drama.

But when they have the tools to recognize what’s real and what’s not?

They gain more than knowledge.
They gain power.
They gain peace.
They gain pride in who they are.

At CoolCantor Hebrew School, we prepare students not just to read Hebrew or deliver a speech—but to step into the world with confidence, kindness, and clarity.

That’s what makes this the Best Hebrew Course for the modern Jewish family.

So if you’re looking for:
• Online Bat Mitzvah Training
• Bar Mitzvah Preparation Classes
• Weekly Torah Portion Study
• Or the Hebrew Language Learning Program your child will actually love…

You’re in the right place.

We don’t just train leaders.
We raise them.

Want your child to build unshakable confidence and know how to choose the right friends?

Send me a message. Let’s talk.

You’ve got one shot at this milestone. Let’s make it unforgettable.

Thanks,
Cantor Ben
