Fake Friends Talk Behind Your Back: Here’s How I Teach My Students to Protect Their Confidence

Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons

By Cantor Ben – Founder of CoolCantor Hebrew School

Have you ever watched a kid’s confidence slowly unravel?

I have. And not because they failed a test. Not because they weren’t invited to a party. But because someone they thought was a friend… turned out to be the opposite.

This isn’t just a problem on playgrounds or in middle school cafeterias. Gossip—those little whispers when someone walks away—can be one of the most damaging forces in a child’s development.

And as a life coach and educator through the CoolCantor Hebrew School, I’m here to say: it doesn’t have to be this way.

The Fastest Way to Spot a Fake Friend

I teach this in almost every Online Bar Mitzvah Lesson, Bat Mitzvah prep class, and leadership coaching session:

If they gossip to you, they will gossip about you.

That truth hit home recently for one of my students, Zoe, from West Virginia. Zoe is bright, funny, and incredibly empathetic. She’s been part of our Online Hebrew School community for months now, studying everything from Torah Portion insights to emotional intelligence techniques grounded in Jewish wisdom.

One week, during our virtual Bar/Bat Mitzvah training, Zoe shared something that stuck with me.

She had a friend—let’s call her “Ava.” Ava would constantly talk trash about other girls in their class: their clothes, their voices, even their families. At first, Zoe laughed along, not because she liked the gossip, but because it felt like the “price of admission” to belong.

But over time, Zoe noticed something.

When she would get a compliment or win an award, Ava would go quiet. She’d roll her eyes. Shrink. Gossip, even.

Zoe told me: “I realized if she’s talking like this about them, what does she say about me when I’m not around?”

Exactly.

Jewish Wisdom on Gossip and Integrity

The Torah is clear: words build—or destroy—worlds.

Lashon Hara, or “evil speech,” is not just frowned upon in Jewish tradition—it’s considered one of the most harmful things a person can do. Why? Because it damages relationships, reputations, and trust—often silently, invisibly, and irreversibly.

During our Weekly Torah Portion study, we talk about how leaders in our tradition—like Moses, Joseph, and Esther—chose words that uplifted, even when it was hard. They didn’t need gossip to feel powerful. They had purpose.

So I told Zoe this:

Don’t judge people by how they treat you when you’re shining.
Judge them by how they treat others when they think no one’s watching.

That’s the mirror.
That’s the truth.

And that’s what I teach through every part of my CoolCantor Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Training.

How We Turn Torah Into Life Skills

At CoolCantor, our Online Jewish Education program isn’t just about memorizing prayers or repeating facts. It’s about making Jewish Studies Online relevant to the real-world pressures kids face—like navigating gossip, jealousy, and peer pressure.

When kids enroll in our Hebrew Language Learning Program, they receive so much more than Hebrew Education Online. They learn to lead with character. To speak with integrity. To choose friends who don’t just smile in their face, but protect their name when they’re not in the room.

Our curriculum includes:
• Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons and Online Bat Mitzvah Training with life-coaching tools baked in
• Hebrew Language Classes Online using the Best Hebrew Course methods
• Judaism Classes Online that tackle emotional topics with Torah as our guide
• Weekly Torah Portion Study that connects ancient wisdom to today’s challenges
• A safe space where students from all backgrounds (including Adult Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah for Adults) can reflect, share, and grow

And yes—we also help students Learn to Read Hebrew, prep for their Bar Mitzvah Ceremony, and complete high-quality Bar Mitzvah Training with individualized support. But we never stop at “ritual.” We aim for transformation.

What Zoe Learned—and What You Can Teach Your Child Too

By the time Zoe had her big Bat Mitzvah lesson milestone, she had not only mastered her Torah portion… she had learned to surround herself with people who uplift.

She cut ties with Ava—not dramatically, not with malice, but with clarity. She chose better friends. Ones who cheered when she succeeded. Ones who didn’t compete, but collaborated. And that decision alone built her confidence more than any speech could.

I saw it in her voice. In her posture. In her joy.

Because confidence isn’t just about what you say—it’s about who you keep close.

Three Action Steps to Help Your Child Choose Better Friends

Want to help your child build (and protect) their confidence? Here’s how we start at CoolCantor:
1. Do the “Room Test”
Ask: “If you walked away from your group of friends right now… what would they say about you?” If the answer isn’t kind, it’s time for a friend inventory.
2. Role Play Kindness
In our Online Jewish Classes, we often role-play common situations: What do you do when someone gossips? What do you say when you’re pressured to laugh at someone? These simulations build emotional muscle.
3. Affirm Integrity
Celebrate when your child chooses to walk away from drama. Reinforce the idea that “being popular” is less important than being peaceful.

Because at CoolCantor Hebrew School, we believe Bar Mitzvah lessons, Hebrew School sessions, and every Torah Portion lesson should build your child’s moral backbone—not just their memory.

Final Word: Your Name Deserves Protection

Teach your child this:

A good friend claps when you win.
A great friend defends your name—even when it’s not convenient.
And a fake friend? You’ll spot them the moment they speak badly about someone else.

At CoolCantor, we raise kids who know the difference—and have the strength to choose wisely.

Thanks for reading. If you’d like your child to gain leadership, confidence, and integrity along with their Bat or Bar Mitzvah preparation, reach out to me.

We’ll build it together—one voice note, one lesson, one act of courage at a time.
