Embrace Your Passion, Even When Others Don’t Get It: A Lesson from CoolCantor

A few years ago, one of my Bar Mitzvah students, Jason from Boston, was excited to share his hobby with his class. Proudly, he said, “Coding.” But instead of praise or curiosity, what he got was laughter. His classmates giggled, and the teacher, who should have been supportive, made a snide comment, saying, “You’re not Steve Jobs.”
Imagine how discouraging that must have been for Jason. At that moment, it would’ve been so easy for him to give up, to let go of his passion for coding, and to try to “fit in” with his peers. But Jason didn’t do that. Instead, he doubled down on what made him unique. He leaned into his love for coding, refusing to let the judgment of others hold him back.
Fast forward a few years, and Jason is now working for Nvidia, one of the top tech companies in California, making a whopping $500,000 a year doing what he loves. The same kids who mocked him? They’re still figuring out their own paths. And that teacher? She missed the chance to encourage a future innovator.
Jason’s story isn’t just about success in a high-paying job—it’s about embracing your passion, even when others don’t understand it. It’s about knowing that fitting in is overrated and that being different is often the key to changing the world.
Fitting In Is Overrated
The world doesn’t need more people who blend in and follow the crowd. What it needs are individuals who have the courage to be themselves and to pursue what lights them up inside, regardless of what others think. Whether you’re into coding, art, music, or sports, your passion is what makes you stand out—and that’s your superpower.
At CoolCantor, I help students like Jason embrace their individuality, and I can help your child do the same. My Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons aren’t just about learning to read Hebrew or preparing for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony. They’re about building confidence, developing resilience, and giving kids the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges. Through my programs, kids learn that their worth isn’t defined by what others think but by their own passions and values.
How Jason Turned Mockery Into Motivation
After the incident in his classroom, Jason could have easily decided that coding wasn’t worth the ridicule. Instead, he saw the laughter as a challenge—a push to prove everyone wrong. He spent hours learning new coding languages, honing his skills, and staying focused on his goals.
When we worked together in his Bar Mitzvah training, I encouraged him to keep going despite the negativity around him. We discussed how the Torah teaches perseverance, and Jason really embraced the idea of staying true to his path, just as the great leaders of Jewish history did. This resilience didn’t just help him with his Bar Mitzvah; it fueled his journey toward a career in tech.
Years later, Jason reached out to tell me how much our conversations about grit and confidence meant to him. He didn’t just survive the mockery—he thrived because of it. And now, he’s making a name for himself in an industry that’s all about innovation and forward-thinking.
The Power of Being Different
The truth is, being different is powerful. Many of the most successful people in the world got to where they are because they didn’t try to fit in. They embraced their passions, their quirks, and their dreams, and they ignored the doubters along the way.
Weekly Torah Portion lessons at CoolCantor Virtual Hebrew School provides a great opportunity for students to reflect on these lessons. Each week, I guide students through stories from the Torah that emphasize perseverance, individuality, and staying true to one’s beliefs—principles that are just as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.
In Jason’s case, the Torah stories helped him see that he didn’t need his classmates’ or teacher’s approval to validate his love for coding. Just like the leaders in the Torah, he realized that being different was something to celebrate, not something to hide.
How to Help Your Child Embrace Their Passion
So, how can you help your child embrace their passions, even when the world might not understand them?
1. Encourage their interests: Whether it’s coding, art, sports, or music, encourage your child to pursue what they love. Passion is a key ingredient in building confidence.
2. Teach resilience: Life will throw challenges at them—mockery, doubt, and even failure. But it’s how they respond that matters. Teach your child to see obstacles as opportunities to grow.
3. Provide a supportive environment: Programs like my Virtual Bar Mitzvah Lessons are designed not just to teach Hebrew but to create a space where kids can explore who they are in a supportive environment. When your child feels accepted for who they are, they’re more likely to thrive.
4. Focus on progress, not perfection: Learning to embrace failure is an important part of any journey. Remind your child that it’s okay to make mistakes—they’re part of the learning process.
5. Be a role model: If your child sees you pursuing your own passions and standing up for what you believe in, they’ll be more likely to do the same. Show them that it’s okay to be different.
Your Weirdness Is Your Superpower
Jason’s story is just one example of how staying true to yourself can lead to incredible success. And his story is a reminder to all of us that we don’t need to fit in to make an impact. In fact, it’s often those who stand out who change the world.
At CoolCantor Hebrew School I’m not just teaching kids how to prepare for their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs—I’m teaching them how to be confident, resilient, and unapologetically themselves. So, if you want your child to embrace their passions and develop the confidence to chase their dreams, check out my Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons.
Because in the end, the ones who don’t fit in are the ones who shape the future.
