Don’t Just Fit In—Stand Out: Helping Your Child Embrace Their Unique Jewish Identity

Hi, I’m Cantor Ben from CoolCantor Hebrew School, where I
help students prepare for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah—but more importantly,
where I teach them how to love who they are, as they are.
Because here’s the truth no one tells most kids:
You don’t need to be liked by everyone. You need to be loved by yourself.
In today’s world of social media, test scores, sports
rankings, and filtered perfection, our children are being told to fit
in. To blend. To polish themselves into someone else’s idea of perfect.
But at CoolCantor, I teach them something better.
That standing out is the real win.
Let me tell you about my student, Emily—a 12-year-old from Vancouver who reminded me what true leadership looks like.
⸻
Emily Wasn’t Like the Other Girls—and That’s What Made Her a Leader
When Emily first joined my Online Bat Mitzvah Lessons, she
was hesitant. Her mom told me that in Hebrew school, Emily had felt
“different.”
She loved coding more than singing. She dressed in her own
colorful style. She asked deep questions during Jewish Studies Courses
while her peers just memorized lines.
Her uniqueness became a source of shame, not pride.
That broke my heart.
So at CoolCantor, we flipped the script.
I reminded Emily: Judaism thrives on questioning. Our
tradition is built on people who asked, challenged, created, and led
with their hearts.
That’s when her Bar Mitzvah journey began to bloom.

How We Built Confidence Through Online Jewish Education
Our Online Hebrew School isn’t about conformity. It’s about confidence.
With each week of Online Bat Mitzvah Training, we worked through the Torah Portion—yes—but more than that, we made it personal.
We explored how Jewish Wedding Traditions, the Weekly
Torah Portion, and even customs like the Baby Naming Ceremony teach us
to honor each person’s unique role in the world.
Emily began to find her voice.
She started leading parts of the Weekly Torah Portion
Study herself. She wrote reflections during our Judaism Classes Online
that made me pause and say: “Wow, this girl has a rabbinic soul.”
Except I’m not a Rabbi.
I’m a Cantor—trained by a brilliant Jewish Wedding Rabbi
mentor—and I use my background as a Life Coach to help kids like Emily
unlock their potential beyond the text.
And it worked.
⸻
From Self-Doubt to Self-Love
Within a few months, Emily had transformed.
She was thriving in Hebrew Education Online. She was even
helping her younger brother—who’s preparing for his own Bar Mitzvah—for
adults!—with his Hebrew Language Learning Program.
She created a slideshow for her Bar Mitzvah lesson that
included her own Torah interpretation and her favorite Jewish Wedding
Customs. She said, “Ben, I want to include things like the Chuppah and
the Hora because it makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger.”
Yes, Emily was studying for her Bat Mitzvah. But what she was really doing? Learning to lead her life with heart.
That’s what we do at CoolCantor.
Whether it’s Bar Mitzvah Training, Adult Bat Mitzvah
coaching, or Virtual Hebrew School Program support, we help each student
become who they’re meant to be—not who the world expects them to be.
⸻
Helping Your Child Love Their Jewish Self
One of the most powerful parts of the Jewish journey is learning that you’re not here to be a copy.
You’re here to be a light.
When I work with students through our Online Bar/Bat
Mitzvah Tutoring or Hebrew Language Classes Online, I don’t just focus
on how to Learn to Read Hebrew.
I focus on helping them read themselves—what makes them shine, what lights them up, what makes them feel seen.
The Best Hebrew Course in the world won’t change your child’s life unless it also builds their spirit.
And that’s what makes CoolCantor Hebrew School different.

Actionable Advice for Parents: Raising Unapologetically Jewish Kids
Here are three ways you can help your child fall in love with their Jewish identity—and their own reflection:
1. Celebrate Individuality During Rituals
Whether you’re planning a Bat Mitzvah, a Bar Mitzvah for
adults, or a Jewish Baby Naming Ceremony, allow room for creativity. Let
your child write a few lines of the service. Let them choose a unique
piece of Jewish music. Personalization makes it stick.
2. Redefine “Success” in Hebrew School
Instead of praising perfection, praise courage. Tell your
child, “I’m proud you asked that question,” or “I love how you made that
Torah Portion: Your own.”
3. Link Tradition to Today
Talk about Jewish Wedding Traditions, Jewish Baby Naming
Celebrations, or even your own Jewish Wedding Ceremony. Show your child
that Judaism isn’t a relic—it’s a mirror. It grows as they grow.
⸻
Why I Believe in This Work
I’ve officiated many Jewish weddings in Toronto—some
traditional, some modern. As a Jewish Wedding Cantor mentored by a great
Jewish Wedding Rabbi, I’ve led ceremonies filled with authentic ritual:
the Ketubah signing, the Chuppah, the breaking of the glass, and yes,
The Jewish Wedding Hora that gets everyone dancing.
But the moment that always stays with me?
It’s when the couple stands beneath the canopy, fully seen and loved, exactly as they are.
That’s the vision I bring to every student I coach.
Whether they’re preparing for their Torah Portion
Lessons Online or learning in our Online Hebrew Reading Course, they
deserve to feel fully accepted.
Fully enough.
Fully Jewish.
⸻
A Final Thought for You, the Parent
You want your child to be confident. Resilient. Proud of their heritage.
But here’s the secret:
Confidence doesn’t come from fitting in.
It comes from standing out—and being okay with it.
That’s what CoolCantor Hebrew School stands for. Whether
Your child is preparing for their first Online Bar Mitzvah Lesson or
Your family is seeking Online Jewish Classes for adults. The mission is
the same:
We’re not just training voices for the bimah.
We’re nurturing souls to lead.
If your child is ready to stop shrinking and start shining, I’d be honored to walk that journey with them.
Because Hebrew Education isn’t just about language.
It’s about love. Identity. And joy.
Let’s begin.
Thanks,
Ben
