Cool Cantor

Can My Non-Binary Child Have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah? Absolutely. Here’s How I Make It Meaningful and Fully Inclusive

Personalized Bar Mitzvah Preparation

By Cantor Ben

When Lee’s parents first reached out to me from Denver, they were feeling both hopeful and worried.

They had a beautiful child who identified as non-binary and had recently begun exploring Jewish identity more deeply. They wanted to mark this important transition with a ceremony that felt sacred, personal, and true to who Lee was.

But their experience reaching out to synagogues and clergy had been painful. Some doors had been closed. Some conversations had been awkward or dismissive. One rabbi had even told them they were “not sure how to handle that.”

That broke my heart.
Because here’s the truth. Every Jewish child deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and included.

Yes, your non-binary or gender-expansive child can absolutely have a meaningful and fully inclusive Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
At CoolCantor Hebrew School, I call it a B Mitzvah. And I have supported many students like Lee on this exact path.

A Ceremony That Fits Your Child

A B Mitzvah is a powerful way to mark the coming of age of a Jewish child who does not identify strictly as male or female. It is a sacred moment of growth and identity, and it deserves the same care, intention, and celebration as any traditional Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah.

In fact, it deserves even more attention to detail.

That is why I customize every part of the experience, from our Online Bar Mitzvah Lessons or Online Bat Mitzvah Lessons, to the Bar Mitzvah Classes, to the ceremony itself.

For Lee, that meant…
• Choosing Hebrew blessings that used gender-neutral language, when possible
• Using inclusive pronouns and language throughout the program
• Helping Lee create a D’var Torah (speech about the Weekly Torah Portion) that reflected their identity and values
• Reassuring the whole family that they were safe, seen, and respected every step of the way

Why Families Come to Me

The sad reality is that many Jewish families with non-binary or LGBTQ+ children have been turned away or left to feel like outsiders.

I have received emails from parents in New York, California, Alberta, and Florida, all saying a version of the same thing:

“You are the first Jewish teacher or Cantor who made us feel like we belonged.”
That should not be the case. But it is. Which is why I take this work so seriously.

What Makes My Program Different

My approach blends traditional Hebrew Education and Jewish Studies Online with deep emotional intelligence and coaching.

As a Life Coach, I do more than teach Hebrew and Torah. I help each child step into their confidence, their voice, and their power.

Every lesson is personalized. Every interaction is human.

Whether your child is learning to chant their Torah Portion, preparing to lead blessings, or exploring how Judaism connects to their identity, they will be guided with love and respect.

Many students begin with my Learn to Read Hebrew Online program or Reading Hebrew for Beginners. Some start with transliteration and build up confidence slowly. Others dive fully into the Best Hebrew Course and reach fluency.

Whatever the starting point, we move at their pace. No judgment. Just steady growth.

Online Means Safe and Flexible

My program is fully online. That means your child can learn in an environment where they feel safe and calm.
No synagogue pressure. No comparison to others. Just focused, affirming learning.

Some families worry that Online Hebrew School or Online Jewish Education cannot be as meaningful as in-person programs.
But my students prove otherwise every day.

Lee, for example, learned all their Hebrew from home in Denver. They participated in Judaism Classes Online, completed the Life Mastery Series Course, and eventually led a beautiful, heartfelt ceremony that honored both Jewish tradition and personal truth.

When I joined them virtually on the day of their B Mitzvah, their joy was visible on screen. So was the emotion on their parents’ faces.

It was real. It was Jewish. And it was theirs.

Adult Students Too

This inclusive approach is not just for kids.

I have supported Adult Bar Mitzvah and Adult Bat Mitzvah students who identify as non-binary or gender-expansive and never had a chance to celebrate this milestone earlier in life.

With my Bar Mitzvah for Adults and Bat Mitzvah For Adults programs, I offer Personalized Bar Mitzvah Preparation that fits your life, your schedule, and your values.

You can Learn Judaism Online, explore Torah Portion Coaching, dive into the Life Mastery Course, and create a ceremony that reflects who you are today.

No judgment. No rigidity. Just respect, tradition, and transformation.

Language Matters

One of the most important ways I create a welcoming space is through language.
Instead of saying “Bar Mitzvah boy” or “Bat Mitzvah girl,” I use phrases like “student,” “leader,” or simply call them by name.

In Hebrew blessings, we adjust where possible to avoid unnecessary gendering. And in the ceremony, I work closely with the family to find language that feels right.

This small shift makes a big difference.
Kids like Lee notice. They feel included. They feel loved. And they shine.

What Parents Say

Here are just a few things parents of non-binary students have told me:
• “Thank you for never once making us feel like we had to explain or defend our child.”
• “This was the first time I saw my child fully confident and proud in a Jewish setting.”
• “You made our whole family feel like we had a place in the Jewish world again.”

That is why I do this work.

Every Jewish family deserves to feel that way.

If This Is Your Family

If you are the parent of a child who is non-binary or questioning gender identity, and you are looking for a Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, or B Mitzvah experience that honors who they are, I want you to know:

You are not alone.

There is nothing wrong with your child.
And there is a place for you here.

At CoolCantor Hebrew School, we will meet your child exactly where they are and help them grow into who they are meant to be.

If you would like to learn more about how I help families like yours with Bar Mitzvah Preparation Online, Bat Mitzvah Training Online, or Online Jewish Classes, just send me a message.

I reply personally. And I would be honored to walk this journey with your family.

Because every Jewish child deserves a ceremony that reflects their truth.
And every Jewish soul deserves to be celebrated.
