Can Adults Have A Bar Mitzvah Or Bat Mitzvah Even If They Don’t Know Any Hebrew?
Sometimes the Jewish journey begins at thirteen.
Sometimes it begins at fifty three.
Or sixty three.
Or seventy three.
There is no expiration date on discovering who you are.
I have heard from adults who tell me:
“I recently discovered more about my Jewish heritage.”
“I never had a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah.”
“I don’t know how to read Hebrew.”
“I would love to do this, but surely I am too old now.”
My answer is always the same.
You are not too old. You are not too late. And you do not need to know Hebrew before you begin.
One of the most beautiful examples of this was my student Julie from Philadelphia.
Julie Discovered Her Jewish Heritage Later In Life
Julie did not come to me with years of Hebrew School behind her.
Her story was very different.
She discovered her Jewish heritage later in life.
That discovery opened a door.
Suddenly Judaism was not simply something interesting to learn about. It was connected to her own identity and her own story.
She wanted to understand more.
She wanted to Learn Judaism Online.
She wanted Jewish education that would help her understand what being Jewish could actually mean in her life.
Eventually, that journey led to something Julie had never experienced as a child.

You Do Not Need To Know Hebrew Before Starting
This is where many adults become intimidated.

Julie’s Education Went Far Beyond Hebrew
This is where Julie’s experience became especially meaningful.

Adult Jewish Education should not feel like someone took a children’s Hebrew School curriculum and handed it to an adult.
An adult brings decades of life experience into Jewish learning.
Love.
Loss.
Family.
Success.
Regret.
Relationships.
Career.
Parenthood.
Change.
Questions about purpose and legacy.
When an adult studies a Weekly Torah Portion, those experiences affect how they understand it.
That is what can make Online Jewish Education so powerful later in life.
You are not simply asking what the Torah Portion says.
You are asking:
“What does this mean to me now?”
Why My Approach Is Different

But what Julie needed was not simply another course.

I officiated Julie’s Adult Bat Mitzvah ceremony virtually online.
Julie and her family gathered together, while other family members and guests were able to join virtually from wherever they were.
Suddenly people who were separated geographically could witness the same moment together.
Julie had studied with me online.
She had explored Torah and Jewish life online.
And now the journey culminated online as well.
What mattered was not that everyone was sitting inside the same sanctuary.
What mattered was what Julie had accomplished.
Imagine What That Moment Felt Like
Think about the emotional significance.
Julie had discovered her Jewish heritage later in life.
Instead of thinking, “I missed my opportunity,” she made a different decision.
She learned.
She asked questions.
She studied Torah.
She explored Jewish values.
She prepared.
And then, surrounded by family and joined virtually by people who cared about her, she celebrated her Adult Bat Mitzvah.
Something that could have remained a regret became an accomplishment.
That is why I love this work.
An Online Adult Bat Mitzvah Can Be Deeply Personal
Some people hear the word online and assume something will feel less meaningful.
Julie’s experience demonstrated the opposite.
Online learning gave her flexibility.
Online preparation allowed us to work together despite living in different cities.
And the virtual ceremony allowed people to participate regardless of geography.
Technology did not replace the human connection.
Technology made the connection possible.
