Abused Women

Recently, my online bat mitzvah student came to me with her family wanting to learn more about Jewish education and online bat mitzvah lessons. I explained to her that at CoolCantor Online Jewish education we lean so much more than how to sing a Torah portion. We lean about spreading kindness and goodness in the world one kind action at a time.
My online bat mitzvah student expressed that throughout her years at Jewish day school, the topic of turning 12 and becoming a Bat Mitzvah was highlighted. This was not a discussion about the party but focused on the importance within the Jewish culture of becoming a woman. A Bat Mitzvah is a transition to adulthood. As I am now 12, I will be more responsible for my own actions, behaviours and interactions. Even though I am now considered an adult, I know my parents will continue to be role models and the best support system for me. I am grateful for the love they have given me and know they will continue to show guidance in their everyday actions. This also includes my brothers, who are protective as well as “challenging” at times!
This all relates directly to my Torah portion in recognizing the importance of family, compassion and advocating for yourself and others.
The name of my Torah portion is “Massei” and focuses on standing up for oneself. In my portion, it describes how there was a group of people who were unfairly treated when god was promising land to other people, not them. They felt hurt and cheated. But instead of not doing anything about it, they proudly stood up for themselves. In this situation, they did what was right and challenged god by saying everybody should get a fair share of land.
When I reflect on my portion, it also makes me think about the relationships I have with my family. I am reminded to never take for granted the unconditional love and support they give me.
When I think of the meaning of my portion, I am reminded about being compassionate, having empathy and giving back to those in need. For my mitzvah project, I am proud to support the charity, The Yellow Brick House. This charity provides a safe shelter for abused women and children. Their goal is to help rebuild the women and children’s lives who have been mistreated and live in challenging conditions. This charity helps them feel comfortable and safe by taking them out of difficult toxic relationships or environments. They help women feel like they have a voice. To help, I have asked for items to be donated like shoes, clothes and everyday essential hygiene products. These are a luxury for many families. By making a donation, you can help change somebody’s life. This relates back to my Torah portion by honouring brave women who have stood up for themselves and are able to seek charitable support. It reminds us to not mistreat or hurt another person, and to be generous to those in need. Also, once you’ve helped others, expect nothing back in return. My involvement in this initiative and giving back to the community has taught me that not everybody is so fortunate in life. Some live in fear, yet we all deserve to feel safe and protected.
I am so grateful to be sharing my Bat Mitzvah here with all of you today. Thank you all so much for coming to help me celebrate and embark on my next chapter as a Jewish woman.
